“Hunger for the Lord”

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6
It’s important to remember, the fruit of a move of God isn’t always about experiences with tangible peace or joy in a worship service, or the number of people gathered. Being hungry for God goes beyond attending revival meetings. Ultimately, true evidence of hunger in a Christian’s life can be seen when a believer has an insatiable appetite for seeking Christ and His righteousness.
In the sermon on the Mount, Christ tells us: “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6). Truly, there is much excitement centered around large gatherings in the name of Jesus Christ, catching the attention of the world. But I think it is important to realize that one does not have to travel miles and miles to a specific event or conference, nor gather with thousands of other believers, to experience this kind of hunger for the Lord.
God can revive your heart to pursue Him and His ways wherever you are in the world. All you must do is ask Him to stir your heart for that hunger and thirst. The more you begin to say no to the world and your flesh and yes to Christ and His righteous ways, the more the Holy Spirit will draw you into a life of devotion to the Lord. Most often, God begins to do His work in our hearts and lives when we keep our minds fixed on His Word. His Word renews our minds and transforms our lives to reflect His ways above our own. We cannot stir up a hunger in our own strength, we need God’s help. We must petition God and ask Him to strengthen our desires for living more Christlike. He promises to bless us and satisfy us.
Heavenly Father,
I long for my life to reflect on You so others see how excellent and perfect Your ways are compared to the ways of this world that are fallen, corrupt, and void of Your perfect love and truth. I often fail and give into fleshly temptation, and I thank You that I have been justified and made righteous in Your sight because of Your Son, Christ Jesus!
Despite my shortcomings, you still desire for me to mature and grow in my walk. You are a God who transforms and purifies, so I ask You to help me renew my mind with Your Word so I can know Your good, acceptable, and perfect will and see my life conformed to the image of Your Son. I am asking You to give me a hunger and a thirst for righteous living. I know I cannot conjure this up in my heart; I need Your help. I know I do not need to be surrounded by thousands of people or have a tangible encounter in Your presence to be stirred to seek You more. You meet me wherever I am. You are faithful to do this work of sanctification in my life, so thank You for strengthening me in my spiritual disciplines. May I have a testimony of a great transformation to give You all the glory! In Your son Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to Him be the Glory, Power, and Dominion forever and ever and to the Holy Ghost that is yet abiding in the body. Over the next three weeks, we will look at “ The Steps in Healing from Hurt.”

The church has the power to gather, encourage, and heal God’s beloved people. Hurt stems from experiencing someone abusing their power whether spiritually or naturally. The first step to healing is to define the hurt. Hurt never just go away! Time will not bring complete healing. Nothing happens if you have not clearly defined the offense. You can’t forgive something if you don’t know or are not able to articulate what the hurt is. You must give your heart to Jesus, letting Him become your Lord. You must forgive (release) the person who has hurt you. Matthew 5:23-24 reads, “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar and go thy way; first, be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift”. Hurt can affect us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The purpose of this step is not to harbor resentment. Instead, the initial process of healing hinges upon you naming the wrong behavior that occurred.

Apostle Paul gives us a simple model for healing hurt in II Corinthians 2:5-11. “But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted on many. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. For to this end also did I write that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. To whom ye forgive anything, I forgive also: for if I forgave anything, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices”.

Looking back on hurt is not what God has called us to do (concentrating on situation) Philippians 3:13-14 tells us, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”. Drawing us to look back at offenses and hurt is one of Satan’s tactics in keeping us spiritually immobilized. If we are consumed by the past it will hurt, we will come to a standstill in our Christian Walk. Brother and sisters there is nothing we can do to change the past. But do not allow the past to control your future or destiny.  Because God has created each one of us for a purpose.  Psalms 139:15-16, 14 tells us, “My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. “ I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well”. Our main purpose is to glorify Him (Jesus Christ). Because letting go requires the personal discipline to resist the temptation to repeatedly fight the battles of the hurt and remain focused on the victory that awaits in the future. Until we find the true source of the hurt and turn it off through forgiveness, it will continue to cause negative emotions.  Until next week let us remember, “… with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26b).

“Praying for the Power of the Holy Spirit”

“For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer,  and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:19

Prayer is powerful. We hear this a lot, but how often do we pray like we believe prayer has the power to affect our daily life? When a string of prayers goes unanswered, I can easily fall into a routine of listing off prayers without attaching my full confidence in God’s ability to answer them. It’s not natural for us to want what God wants for our lives. We want what we want and we tend to want it now.

Philippians 11:19 is part of Paul’s thanks to the Philippians for praying for him! They helped him in prayer, and with a need he had. The power of the Holy Spirit helps us to recognize the power of prayer. He translates our prayers to heaven, even when we lack the words to say them. He knows when we’re praying out of routine, and need to be reminded of the guaranteed listening ear of the Father, and assured answer.

Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf” (2 Corinthians 1:11). Paul had confidence in the power of prayer, and we can too. Ask the Holy Spirit to come into our lives daily and show us!

Heavenly Father,
You are the life and length of our days. God, You are our Provider, Healer, and Defender. Every need we lift up to heaven, You are already aware of. The state of our hearts is always known by You, who knows us completely. You see our pain and confusion and know our frustration and struggle to love the other people in our lives. Father, You see it all. You know it all. Thank You, for being in all of it with us. Thank You for listening to our prayers, and thank You for answering them. You are faithful, compassionate, and caring about our concerns. We are thankful You are a personal God.

Today, we pray, Holy Spirit, for You to come into our lives and fill our hearts to the brim with everything we need to live this day to the fullest, as Jesus died for. Help us understand what we need, and let the rest go as we trust You, God, with our lives. Help us to heal from pain, even though answers to our prayers haven’t happened the way we want in the time we want them to. Increase our trust in who You are, and help us to trust in the power of prayer.

This day, we surrender afresh to You, Jesus. Our arms are open and our hearts are fully devoted to You. Help us to follow you each day, discerning what to do and where to go. Help us to live in the moment, praying continually and trusting Your lead on our lives. Jesus, we know we can always look to You when we feel isolated, hurt, betrayed, and sad. We know You know how we feel. Thank You for walking with us, for setting Your Holy Spirit in us, to guide and comfort us. As we trust in the power of prayer, perhaps comfort is what we need the most. Comfort and encourage us, God, as only You can.

Father, we want to know with the same confidence Paul had, a powerful effect of our prayers and of those who intercede for us. Help us to reach out in confidence when we need prayer, God. And help us to pay attention to the people in our lives who also need our prayers. We want to feel the power of prayer, and Holy Spirit rushing through our lives as we remain in constant conversation with You, Father.

Thank You for faithfully meeting us where we are in our lives before we even call on You. The most dependable, reliable, faithful, Father. We love You with our whole hearts. In Your son Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
