Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, power, and dominion forever and ever, and to the Holy Ghost, who continues to dwell within us, guiding our steps. “The Holiness of God” is the topic of this week’s message.
The concept of God’s holiness is not just a theological idea but a crucial aspect of our understanding of God and ourselves. When we truly grasp God’s holiness, it enlightens us to see many things in our lives. However, when we lose sight of God’s holiness, we lose the understanding of what is holy and unholy. We also lose sight of our sinful nature, our need for God’s grace, and the dire state of our society. Understanding God’s holiness is like a spiritual awakening, guiding us to a deeper understanding of our existence.
The meaning of holy is being set apart from what is unclean. Encountering God always evokes reverence and fear, leading us to separate ourselves from sin. In Isaiah 6:1-8, we read about Isaiah’s vision of God in the temple. He sees the Lord “sitting on a throne lofty and exalted” (vs.1). Seraphim surround Him, calling to each other, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of his glory” (vs. 3). This awe-inspiring description of God’s holiness should fill us with reverence and respect. Scripture never describes God as “justice” or “love,” but it does say that He is “holy, holy, holy.” When God is defined as “holy, holy, holy,” it emphasizes His absolute purity, separateness, and worthiness of reverence and worship.
In closing, when Isaiah encounters God’s holiness, he becomes aware of his sin and the sinfulness of the society around him. Similarly, recognizing our own sin doesn’t disqualify us from ministry; instead, it should make us eager for God’s grace. This recognition is not a condemnation but a call to transformation, a beacon of hope that guides us toward a better version of ourselves. We should be cautious if we feel worthy of the purpose to which we have been called. We don’t appreciate His amazing grace when we fail to grasp God’s holiness. When we take God’s grace for granted, we should be deterred by a fear of His discipline.
Because “…with God, all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
